History of Pendik district
Pendik is one of the districts of Istanbul that has a long history. Istanbul archaeologists and historians date the area to before the Byzantine Empire, about 5,000 years ago. It is said that this area was first inhabited in 753 BC and in 1080 AD, it fell to the Seljuk sultans. Six years later it became a colony of the Byzantine Empire again.
In ancient times, the name of the region was “Pantikap “, meaning the city of five walls, or five gates. In the twentieth century, the area was considered the summer residence of the wealthy people of Istanbul, and the nobles came to their villas in the area to spend their holidays. Istanbul’s Pendik district was part of the Kartal district until 1987, when it seceded and became an independent district.
