History of uskudar district
Uskudar district of Istanbul dates back to the 7th century AD and the Byzantine Empire. At that time, the city was known as Chrysopolis. It is said that the Persian Empire at that time had a treasury in the city and the name of the city is exactly derived from this issue. In the 12th century, the name of the city was changed to “uskotarion” اسکوتاریون. About a century later, the city fell to the first Ottoman sultans. From then on, the name of the city was changed to “uskotari” and gradually acquired the modern name of “uskudar“.
Uskudar played an important role in the development of the Anatolian Railway in the last century and was also used as a military base for Ottoman and Turkish troops. During World War II, large numbers of British soldiers resided in the area, and the tombs of more than 8,000 of them are now located in cemeteries in the uskudar district of Istanbul. Therefore, the importance of the district is greatly high not only among the Turks, but also at the international level.
